Update for 2011

It's been a while since I've posted.

Well, I've had one of the best Winter breaks so far since I've started my undergraduate career here at Indiana University. I didn't go back home to Gary, but I did enjoy the company of friends and family, work on a few media projects, and prepared myself for the spring 2011 semester.

I thank the Lord for getting through the first week of classes. A lot going on. Finally went for my eye appointment. 3.5 hours long. I was nearly miserable, especially since my eyes got dilated. Banana Republic prescription glasses are on their way. :-)

My classes this semester:

TEL-T 283: Introduction to Production Techniques and Practices

Course Description

T283 is an introductory hands-on production course in which students study and practice the fundamental techniques utilized in field and studio video production. Students will study best practices for visual storytelling aesthetics, camera operation, shot composition and framing, lighting design and set-up, audio acquisition and sound design, graphics, editing with Final Cut Pro and live editing with a Kyak switcher.

Course Objectives and Student Learning Goals
This course aims to give students a practical vocabulary and applied knowledge of video pre-production, production, and post-production for both single camera and multi-camera production environments. After this course students will be able to apply their knowledge of production techniques, aesthetics, and best practices to video production projects from conception to final cut.

TEL-T 284: Intro to Interactive Media Design

Course Description
Intro to Interactive Media Design is a practical, introductory course to the world of interactive and digital media design. The focus will be on creating interactive experiences that are both functional and engaging. This will be approached from various points-of-view: design, usability, technique, and entertainment. We will discuss not only the specifics on how to make something work, but strategies concerning how to make it work well, while making it easy to understand and fun for your audience. This is a class for beginners and assumes no previous experience or expertise. We will however move at a quick pace. It is absolutely essential that you work hard and stay on top of all the class material if you hope to succeed in this course.

Course Objectives

Introduce students to concepts of communication through digital multimedia.
Introduce students to the basics of HTML, XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets, digital imaging, web-based animation, digital audio, and JavaScript.
Learn the basics of designing effective interactive communication.
Analyze the usability of digital media.
Provide a forum for discussion where students can learn from each other through critique.

TEL-T 205: Introduction to Media and Society

(Media Literacy)
This course will explore the construction of social meaning
associated with mediated messages as well as the range of uses and
effects of exposure to mediated messages in individuals, groups,
organizations, and society.

By the end of the semester students completing this course should
have a good general understanding of the relationship between media
industries and individuals, social forces and processes, and be
better-informed media consumers and professionals.

CSCI-A 202: Introduction to Programming II

Advanced programming techniques: user-defined
functions and types, recursion versus iteration, parameter-passing
mechanisms. Classic abstract data types and algorithms. Programming
style. Object-oriented programming.

We will be learning/skimming the surface of:
Web programming with Python/CGI
Web programming with PHP
Java

An update on my life... and my poor little 1TB hard drive

Stupidity. Lord help me. November 9. Working on DVD. Needed music. Found out I left hard drive cables at home. Tried to see if laptop cable would fit. Not really. Didn't have USB cable anyway. Next day. Haven't charges laptop all day. Go to try to charge it? Won't. Computer ok. Just wont charge. Thinking charger may have gone bad. Look up charger, voltage output to see if maybe I had home solution. Then it dawned on me. External hard drive? #1: how are you? Plug it in. No response. Oh no. Think.
19v output from laptop power adapter. 12v input for external hard drive. i sent 7 extra volts of power to the hard drive.

So I went to the Western Digital website. Saw all this stuff about data recovery, etc. I was reminded of the story that my first Telecomm T-205 instructor for Intro to Telecomm: Media and Society, had to pay over 700 to get his data restored from his hard drive. Well, I found out my warranty doesn't end until January 2012. That's good. but the site couldn't answer my questions.

So.. I called Western Digital. DID YOU KNOW? only your very first call for support is free. then you have 30 days after that to receive free phone support. And every call after that is about $15. But I guess their products are that good.

I told them that I had recently been using the power cord from my other Western Digital hard drive before using another power cord that possibly electrocuted my hard drive. Well, to them, that was a no-no. So, they sent me another one. And if the hard drive still doesn't turn on, then I should call a referred data recovery company to recover my data, then they'll send me a brand new hard drive. all for free(just the replacement part).

Ok then. got the power cord. didn't work. The first data recover place I called actually had "Western Digital Data Recovery Partner" in their name. I gravitated to them first. but I got a company that had a halfway professional guy that sounded like he was in a warehouse with echo issues that asked me to leave a voicemail. And I did. I even said I wanted to send my hard drive to them... Well, that wasn't enough.

Then I looked back on Western Digital's site for data recovery services suggestions... I then realized they customized their partners: Platinum, Preferred, and Other.

Well, of course, I want the Platinum service! and the very first one that I call- 24/7... now, that's more like it. He talked to me, followed me through their website, and a specific page on their website to tell me exactly where my hard drive would actually be opened at... It kind of reminded me of my mini-Frito lay experience....

I wanted to share this website with you: It's called DriveSavers Data Recovery: We can save it!: ISO 5 Certified Cleanroom

so far... it may run me about $1500. so I'm going to put my hard drive in a safe place until I come up with that... it's gonna be sooner than later, in Jesus' name.

To me, if I'm gonna get this data, I'm gonna do it, get it right the first time, or I'll pay nothing at all.

PHP, MySQL will do the job but you will need to learn both
If you want people storing usernames and password you will need to setup a database and then encrypt the password with an encryption such as MD5
r unix in ssh, for the most part ...the rest is just html, though I'd be open to other suggestions

Israel Houghton | Moving Forward | Song Story

So, for the longest, (9 months), I thought that Hezekiah Walker made this song (which at the time was a surprise to me), and then just now, I learned that this song was actually made by Israel Houghton and Ricardo Sanchez. What even more interesting is that Ricardo Sanchez is the brother/featuring artist on Hezekiah Walker Album "Souled Out" and on that album he sung "Moving Forward" for him.

I know that some people don't think to invest so much money in this- but if you see that your child is more digitally inclined and prefers to watch media for their recreational activity, here are my suggestions for things to put into your collection:

Between the Lions

This was one of those programs I didn't care to watch, but I may have just been too old for it. It was middle school/high school when I started noticing it. My little sister and brother watched this show a lot as well.

Bill Nye: the Science Guy

It's amazing- the theme song was always so cool, and made me want to watch this television series. I honestly didn't know the credentials of Bill Nye until after I stopped watching the shows. Of what I do know, he went to school for mechanical engineering, and worked for Boeing for a period of time. People of all ages could benefit from this program. Here's a list of tv programs that he did. He's done plenty of other appearances. I just remember him as a young guy- someone I watched over 12 years ago.

Cyberchase

This tv program is really educational- deals a lot with Mathematical concepts, critical thinking, and applications. You can learn a lot, but it wasn't my favorite program. I watched this in middle school and a little during high school (I currently have a 13-yr old sister and 10 yr-old brother- so put the pieces together.)

Liberty Kids

I started watching this somewhere between the end of middle school and the beginning of high school.

"The primary goal of the Liberty's Kids TV series is to provide 7-12 year olds with a fresh and exciting experience of the extraordinary period of 1773 to 1789 in American history.

The Magic School Bus

I absolutely love this show!- Science Related. When I was younger, the same episodes would come on over and over again, but I'd try to convince my mom that I was learning something. I watched this mainly during elementary school.

Mr. Roger's Neighborhood

This is an all-time favorite! I almost forgot about this one!
"Mister Rogers' Neighborhood is a "television visit" between Mister Rogers and his young viewers. The series is geared primarily to 2 to 5 year olds, but appropriate for all ages. With his caring and trusting ways, Mister Rogers creates a calm, safe place for children to learn about themselves, about others, and about the world around them." - PBS
The NEST Family

Inspire. Educate. Entertain. Nurture
- Animated Old and New Testament DVD collection
  To me, this collection is amazing. the script to each video was nicely put together as well. If you're looking for a program/series that parallels the Bible in any way for your children, yet it be in a form that they will watch, I recommend this! There are extra bits in it- but it doesn't take away from the story at all, in my opinion. I think I've only watched four of them in my childhood, but I'll be investing in this collection this year, if it's in the Lord's will for me to do so. Perfect for the entire family!

Reading Rainbow

Now honestly, I loved the song, but Reading Rainbow wasn't my favorite show. Maybe it was due to the fact that I couldn't believe that Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge wasn't really blind, and therefore, didn't have to wear a VISOR. (I watched StarTrek:The Next Generation before I saw this show.) I found myself watching it quite a bit- from elementary school to middle school. Unfortunately, Reading Rainbow doesn't air anymore. Here's one parent's response to PBS ending "The reading Rainbow". If you're one of those parents looking for the series, then here it is!

Schoolhouse Rock!

Oh, the things that Disney owns! There are a few links- none of them that are directly connected to Disney that may be beneficial- It's edutainment in the form of animated music at it's best!

Science Court

I'm not crazy about the website because it gives no justice to how awesome Science Court was. I watched Science Court mostly during my elementary School years. Check out some Science Court Episodes on YouTube to get a better feel on just how awesome this show was.

Sesame Street

Perfect for young ages, especially for learning letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and more! I watched this up until middle school. I then revisited it in college due to learning the "Pinball Number Count" song for an acapella group that I sung in. That's when I realized that the musicians that made some of these songs were just amazing... I don't even remember when I started watching this, but it was way before I started preschool- as a matter of fact, can you believe that I remember my first days of preschool? But moving right along....

This was one of those shows that I really enjoyed, but they kept changing the children that were on there, and after a while, my favorites (like the young lady) were gone, and I lost interest. But that may not be the same for everyone!

Now, there's plenty of other fun, exciting, edutaining programs out there, (Little Einsteins, Dora the Explorer, etc) but these are some that come to mind that I grew up around from my toddler years to high school. I would have these at the beginning of any child's first collection and treat them like guys treat their video game consoles and software... I know. it was random, right? (the Parents with gamers may know what I'm talking about ;-)

I almost got upset because i thought Blogspot was going to send my multimedia updates from my phone to some super random url, but thank the Lord it gave me the option to keep one blog! Thought #1: Media
My Canon Mini DV has run its course- plus, when I bought it- I wasn't in media... now I'm up to getting a bigger and better camera, showing her a little more TLC- I'm into a lot of work, and projects, so I need something that I can keep going for a while- and that will be compatible to old and new mediums. I do most of my work in standard NTSC format 720*489- but when I'm enrolled in classes at Indiana University, I use HD cameras for academic purposes. However, I do tons of field work on my own, and I need something that's up to the challenge... I put some small options below, but if you look @ the Sony models that's posted, THAT is really what I need to upgrade to....

I think what I'd temporarily like is another NTSC mini DV camcorder with not only a built in microphone, but also has a microphone input on it, A/V output, DV/USB ports, the basics... but I'm still pressing forward!

1. The Samsung SMX-K44 or SMX-C14 (But HD is ALWAYS an option!)

WHAT I REALLY NEED (AS A NOVICE) IS... and a portable recorder to go with it...

Thought #2: Storage

So... I'm a madwoman for storage- not exactly like some of my other collegues- I don't exactly have my own server yet... but I got a 1 TB and a 320GB hard drive.... 20GB left on the latter and about 300GB left on the 1T. I add about 1-5 GB of stuff on my 1TB every week, and I have 2 pcs worth of junk saved on them as well- I use the 320GB for small projects and backup.

So now I'm looking to create the ULTIMATE backup... I hope it lasts me for about 4-7 years... I'm ready to get an 8TB and call it a day...

ALSO, Both of my external hard drives run of an external power source other than the power from the usb, so although I just got myself an 8GB thumb drive, I'm hoping to get a minimum of a 60GB hard drive that receives power from the USB port so I work on projects more efficiently... I currently use Western Digital for my storage - i have used them both on MAcs and PCs with no problems- no extra installations. They have never given me a problem.

Thought #3: Mobile Devices

I've had a minimum of 3 phones this year. the Samsung SGH-A727 (AT&T), the Palm Centro, and the Samsung Propel Pro
My latest one has dropped an average of one time every day--- started off as a sleek phone that you could use as a regular mirror every day... not it's a pretty decent mirror that you could used on almost any day. I just need a case for it. I used to have a case for it since the Verizon times. sometimes, I'd like to forget the Verizon times... anyway, I lost my old case sometime after I had my Palm Centro in it an acted a fool and fell on purpose and cracked the face of my palm centro, thus making the touch screen into only a screen. :SOB: :heavy sigh: (Please reference almost every episode in the 1st Season of Mork and Mindy)

BUT Also,... never mind- I was going to say somone could buy me an iPhone, but I already told you what happened to the Palm Centro... and I really like the Windows OS on my phone- as a matter of fact, my Samsung Propel Pro has broken into 3 pieces almost every day, and it has not failed to turn on after I put it back together.... :smile:

Thought #4: Websites...

There's so much I could say about this right now... the projects that I have open right now... the ones that I'm maintaining... the ones that I have a site for with no domain or hosting... the one that I have a domain and host for but no content- or at least it's not in XHTML/CSS/JAVA format yet....

AT&T: Cell phone time problem fixed

AT&T reports it has fixed the problem which caused many cell phones to display the incorrect time.

“The issue occurred during network update procedures that were conducted this morning, and was resolved by 11 a.m. EDT. Anyone still receiving incorrect time information on their devices should simply turn their devices off and then on again to correct the issue,” AT&T spokesperson Amy Grundman stated in an e-mail.

11:35 update

Tammi Duzan admits she is a heavy sleeper. Because of that, she sets two alarms — her bedroom alarm clock and her iPhone 3G cell phone.

Duzan got up for work today and while getting ready, checked her cell phone for the time. Believing the clock’s numbers, Duzan was surprised to see she was up an hour earlier than necessary. She went back to bed.

“So I went back to my room and I thought, well that’s weird. My alarm clock says this,” Duzan said.

Thinking she’d done something in the middle of the night, Duzan reset her bedroom clock and caught a few more Zs.

“I reset my bedroom clock an hour back to match my phone clock because cell phone clocks are never wrong,” Duzan said. It wasn’t until she got into her car to drive to work that she realized something was wrong. Duzan called her co-workers to let them know why she was late. She also reported the problem to AT&T’s customer service.

“They didn’t show any issues. They felt bad, though and gave me a $25 credit,” Duzan said.

Like other AT&T customers, Duzan checked her phone and realized she’d been moved into a different time zone.

“My said Houston when I went into my setings. It said I was in Houston,” Duzan said.

11 a.m. update

The problem with cell phone clocks is under investigation, according to Amy Grundman from AT&T corporate communications.

“I just checked with our local and regional teams and we are not seeing any network issues related to clock settings,” Grundman wrote in an email.

After hearing that numerous customers were reporting problems in the newsroom and on Herald-Times online, Grundman wrote back that more reports about the problem have been received. She stated the network team may have additional information soon.

It appears the problem stems from time zone settings. Those who have set their phones to automatically set the time zone have had their clocks changed. Others who operate the function manually have reported no problems.

9:25 a.m. update

Many AT&T customers are telling us that the time on their phone is off by an hour this morning.

We are hearing reports of folks getting up late, or showing up late to work or appointments, because the AT&T phone time is an hour behind. H-T employees with AT&T service are also showing the wrong time on their phones.

We’ve not heard of customers of any other carriers experiencing the same problems.

Math Teacher Arrested

AT NEW YORK's Kennedy airport today, an individual - later discovered to be a public school teacher - was arrested trying to board a flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a slide rule, and a calculator. At a morning press conference, the U. S. Attorney General disclosed that he believes the man to be a member of the notorious al-gebra movement. He is being charged by the FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.

"Al-gebra is a fearsome cult," he declared. "They seek average solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute value. They use secret code names like 'x' and 'y' and refer to themselves as 'unknowns,' but we have determined they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country. As the Greek philanderer Isosceles used to argue, there are three sides to every triangle."

When asked to comment on the arrest, the President stated, "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes. I am gratified that our government has shown us a sine that it is intent on protracting us from these math-dogs, who are willing to disintegrate us with calculus disregard. Murky statisticians love to inflict plane on every sphere of influence. Under the circumferences, we must differentiate their root, make our point, and draw the line."

The President warned, "These weapons of math instruction have the potential to decimal everything in their math on a scalene never before seen, unless we become exponents of a Higher Power and begin to factor in random facts of vertex."

The Attorney General concluded, "As our Great Leader would say, read my ellipse. Here is one principle he is uncertain of: though they continue to multiply, their days are numbered as the hypotenuse tightens."

30 minute commercials? Are you serious? BMW has a couple of seasons of short ad films out... take a look if you want something to look at. I'm not saying this is my most approved thing, but my instructor, Mark Deuze, Showed the "Beat the Devil" film in class, starring James Brown. Note: viewer discretion is advised- profanity. I WARNED YOU.

So... after a series fo films like that... it is said that BMV sales went up... interesting.
